Niagara Falls Museum Coffin NFM C5

Provenance: Unknown, probably Thebes
Date: late Dynasty XVIII to XIX, circa 1400 -1250 bce.
Material: wood, pitch
Dimensions: 72" long x 20" wide

The only New Kingdom coffin in the collection, this elegant mummy case would appear to be late XVIII or early Dynasty XIX. The coffin was made for a woman. At present, the entire exterior surface is covered with black pitch.

The feminine face is gracefully carved, with a long, straight wig. The box was solidly constructed using fairly large pieces of wood. No determination has been made as yet to the kind of wood used.

The interior of the box appears to be plain and unpainted. No inscriptions are visible inside or outside.

Although no human remains are currently exhibited in this coffin, it has traditionally been associated with NFM Mummy M5.
